Walter Bulpitt was born on 31st March 1891 in Norwood, South Australia. Not much is known about Walter's early life other than his growing up in Norwood and the name of his father whose name was Benjamin Baber Bulpitt. His mother’s name was Celia Julia Gurner. Walter Bulpitt was a naturalized-born subject who was 5’3 with a medium complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair. His previous occupation was an Ironmonger as well as a Salesman before he joined the A.I.F.
Having no military experience, Walter joined the A.I.F as a Private in Adelaide on the 4th of August 1915, being 24 years old. He embarked from Adelaide on his first mission on 12 January 1916 with the 27th Infantry Battalion as an HMAT Medic. However, he was sent home ill from Egypt on 10/7/1916 due to a Right Inguinal Hernia and a Heart Strain. Once home in Australia, he made a full recovery and then re-enlisted on 30/7/1917. On 28 February 1918, Walter embarked on his second mission from Nestor, Melbourne with the Army Medical Corps as an HMAT Medic.
Walter Bulpitt had two different service numbers, 3039 and 19179. 3039 was his first service number when he was with the 27th Infantry Battalion as an HMAT Medic. His second service number, 19179, was when he re-enlisted with the Army Medical Corps (AIF) after he recovered from Right Inguinal Hernia and a Heart Strain.
Walter Bulpitt died on the 18th of July 1966 due to unknown causes, but it is believed that he died due to old age. Walter was cremated and has a memorial plaque in the South Australian Garden of Remembrance at Centennial Park Cemetery, Pasadena, Mitcham City, South Australia, Australia. His grave is located at North Brighton Cemetery, S.A., Australia. He is buried next to his mother and father, Benjamin and Julia Bulpitt as well as his children.
