ROBERT JOHN BUTT
ROBERT JOHN BUTT (1892-1926) born Kirkdale Yass, son of Richard Andrew and Elizabeth Butt nee Bateup working as a labourer at home on Kirkdale, Private 2439, 56th Battalion Reinfocements enlisted on March 14th, 1916 at Goulburn. Robert sailed for England on September 30th, 1916 on board the Aeneas. Training was undertaken in England, and on December 27th, they boarded the Princess Victoria at Folkestone for France. In February 1918 he was admitted to hospital suffering from shell deafness and nerve damage while involved with the battle at Polygon Wood, Belgium September 26th. From the official papers we read Shell burst nearby on above date and he was struck in back of neck by a Piece of mud. Since then has been deaf and getting worse. Was not evacuated but while on leave he reported to Headquarters in London and was sent to No 1 AAH at Harefield. He received treatment at Sutton Veny and Weymouth. He was listed for return to Australia on August 24th, 1918 on the Medice, and was discharged on November 8th. [DAVIS OF GOUNYAN - ROLL OF HONOUR - BM Pittman]
