Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Minmi Cemetery.

On the 13th November 1965, Private Robert Francis Thomas, 31st Battalion (Reg No-4846), horse driver from Charters Towers, Queensland and Garbutt's Siding, Townsville, QLD (1936) and Minmi?, N.S.W., died at Wallsend or Minmi, N.S.W., age 69. Date of burial unknown. Right Hand Side, Section 06, Plot 005.

Born at Balfes Creek, Charters Towers Region, Queensland on the 18th March 1896 to William Richard, died 8.10.1951, Townsville, Queensland, age 80, buried at Belgian Gardens Cemetery, Townsville, Queensland, from Gordon Vale, via Cairns, Queensland, and Rose Eva Thomas nee Walker, died 8.3.1931, age?, sleeping at Gordonvale Cemetery, Gordonvale, Cairns Region, Queensland; husband of Amy Eleanor Thomas nee Hayball, married 1929, Queensland, died 31.5.1967, Wallsend or Minmi, N.S.W., age 60, sleeping at Right Hand Side, Section 06, Plot 005.

Robert enlisted on the 31st October 1916, age 20 years 7 months, at Charters Towers, Queensland.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A18 Wiltshire on the 7th February 1917.

Disembarked Devonport, England 11.4.1917.

Admitted to hospital 29.4.1917 (mumps), 21.2.1918 (pyrexia of unknown origin, trench fever).

Wounded in action - 30.7.1918 (gassed, severe).

Invalided to England 12.8.1918.

Granted furlough from 12.10.1918 to 26.10.1918.

Commenced return to Australia 16.1.1919.

Robert arrived home on the 2nd March 1919, being discharged medically unfit (thoracic pain) on the 8th April 1919.

Mr. Thomas’s name has been inscribed on the Charters Towers Methodist Circuit Great War Roll of Honour.
I have placed poppies at Robert’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
