Athol Cluny McPHERSON was born at "Nangeela" in Casterton, Victoria

His parents were Murray Bennett McPHERSON and Maria Eliza ANTILL - he was one of 8 children

He enlisted in Prahran, Victoria on 15th August, 1914 and embarked with the 5th Infantry Battalion, E Company on the ship Orvieto on 21st October, 1914 from Melbourne

Athol was Killed in Action due to a bullet wound to his heart on 19th August, 1915 and is buried in Shrapnel Valley Cemetery at Gallipoli

Inscription on his headstone reads:

"HE DIED IN THE DEFENCE OF THE FAITH"

Medals:  1914-15 Star, British War Medal & Victory Medal

His name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial

His brother Cyril Sutherland McPHERSON (SN 938) also served in WW1 and was badly wounded & not expected to live but survived and was invalided home in 1918
