Served and suffered during The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery. 

53 years ago today, on the 24th January 1969, Private John Mabbott Campbell, 31st Battalion (Reg No-2122), bootmaker from Tamworth, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 69. CATHOLIC 2-57. 1.

Born at Tamworth, New South Wales on the 5th July 1899 to Alfred Denison and Rosa Mabbott Campbell of Euchareena, New South Wales; husband of Nora Eileen Campbell nee? (married? died 1985, sleeping here), John enlisted August 1915 at Holsworthy, N.S.W. (16 years of age!).

Wounded in action - 20.7.1916 (GSW arm, mild, Battle of Fromelles).

Admitted to hospital 13.2.1917 (bronchitis), 1.3.1917 (bronchitis), 15.4.1917 (myalgia), 21.4.1917 (stricture urethra).

John returned home February 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 24th April 1919.

Mr. Campbell’s name has been inscribed on the Tamworth Public School First World War Roll of Honor (photo, unveiled on the 5th December 1917) and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name possibly inscribed on the Tamworth Anzac Park First World War Memorial Gates.

I have place poppies at Stanley’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Older brother David (Davis) McConnell (2nd Battalion, Reg No-729, Original Anzac, born 1893, died 7.8.1962, age 69, Tamworth Cemetery, New South Wales) also served 1st A.I.F.

Older brother Alfred Denison (4th Battalion & Anzac Provost Corps, Reg No-734, Original Anzac, born 1896, died 1963, Taree, N.S.W.) also served 1st A.I.F.
