William Street

William STREET

Seventh child of Thomas and Sarah Street

Born: 2nd March, 1891
Died: 26th October, 1917

William Street, or Will, as he was known, was born at Woodlands, Central Mologa.
Prior to his enlistment in the army Will worked on the family farm at Mologa. He enlisted in the army on the 1st March, 1916. At the time of his enlistment, Will’s occupation was given as labourer. He was a member of the Machine Gun Section of the 38th Battalion.
It now appears that Will was the first of six of the Street boys to enlist or try to enlist in the First AIF.
A small newspaper article indicates that FIVE of Will’s brothers attempted to enlist in the AIF with him though only three of the Streets were ultimately successful, Will, Henry and Herb.

Will left Melbourne on the 20th June, 1916, and served with the army in France and Belgium. He was a Lewis Gunner and was promoted to Corporal on 22nd September, 1917.

Will was wounded in action on the 12th October, 1917, and died at the 44th Casualty Clearing Station on the 26th October, 1917. He is buried at the Nine Elms British Cemetery, one mile west of Poperinge, Belgium.

The obituary in the Pyramid Hill Advertiser says Will was well known in football and social circles and was a highly popular and respected young man. The paper described him as a ‘strong and well-built young man’. His interest in sport was confirmed in a photograph of a premiership team from Mologa. Will was a member of the Mologa Football team that were premiers in 1915.
