Biography contributed by Greg Sharon

After receiving his parent’s permission, John enlisted aged 19, in Adelaide on the 30th March 1915.  As part of the 7th Reinforcements of the 10th Battalion, he embarked on HMAT Kanowna on the 24th of June 1915. He was taken on strength by the Battalion at Gallipoli in September 1915 and was hospitalized due to sickness, at Mudros for a period.

Following the Battalion’s deployment to France, John was promoted to Sergeant in January 1917, and was subsequently wounded in both legs during fighting at Lagnicourt on the 15th of April 1917. He returned to Australia on the 20th  December 1917 and was discharged in Adelaide as being medically unfit due to his leg wounds, on the 14th August 1918.
