Sydney's parents were Thomas Hobbs and Fanny Eliza Battershill. Sydney was the second oldest of five children. He enlisted 6 December 1915 at Brisbane. Sydney returned to Australia in 1919 and is listed on the Commonwealth Electoral Rolls as living at Samsonvale. His occupation was a labourer. Sydney married May Anderson in 1927
they are listed on the electoral rolls as living at Wondai from 1936. Sydney's younger brother also enlisted returning to Australia in 1919.
