Basil

BASIL CHARLES BUSUTTIN
No: 3260 8th/42nd BATT.
Basil was born in Kalamia (Ayr) on the 25.10.1894, to Giuseppe Giovani and Sarah Stanley Ward.
He enlisted in Townsville on the 7.5.1917, he embarked from Sydney, on the 25.9.1917, aboard the “Hornata”, bound for Liverpool, England. After training he was sent to France on the 6.5.1918. He took part in the Allied counter attack, which started shortly after the 1918 German Spring offensive had been halted However on the 8.8.1918 he was wounded by a gunshot to the right arm, which would result in the loss of 3 fingers on his right hand. After 2 months of rehab, he was posted to the Admin HQ in London, and on the 20.11.1918 he embarked for Australia and was medically discharged on the 31.1.1919.
Basil married Alberta Foxlee in Proserpine on the 20.8.1919, and they had 4 sons, Stan, Basil, Bert and Bill (who was a priest at St Catherine’s Catholic Church of Proserpine). He worked at a variety of occupations, carrying co., the first Shell agency, taxi, fish shop, cane farm and in 1950 he worked for the Post Office until 1959, when he retired. Basil Busuttin passed away on the 5.8.1970 at the age of 75 years. Buried in Proserpine Old Cemetery, section C2 GRAVE 497
