Henry was born in approximately November 1894 in Brighton, Victoria. and grew up there. He moved to and lived in Mt Gambier later on while still being single. There, he worked as a farm hand. At the age of 19, Henry joined the army to help fight the war and was enlisted on the 24th of August 1914. From there, he was put in the 10th Infantry battalion. With the 10th, he landed on Gallipoli on the first day. The fighting saw him promoted rapidly: to Lance Corporal on 29 June, and to Corporal on 16 August. On 31 August he was evacuated off the peninsula sufering from diarrhoea, and only rejoined his unit back in Egypt in March 1916. He went with the 10th to France in April.
On 25 July 1916 he was wounded in the left hand at Pozières. By late October he had recovered. He spent November 1916 detached to the 48th Battalion was was transferred back to the 10th Battalion in December. Soon after he spent some time in hospital with trench foot. In March 1917 he was promoted Sergeant and in May sent to England on a short training course. He spent the remainder of 1917 training in England and rejoined the 10th Battalion in France on 15 January 1918.
On 29 June 1918 he was wounded the second time, on this occasion in the right thigh. He returned to duty on 30 August. However, in October 1918 he was marked for early return to Australia as an original member of the AIF and he departed Europe on 8 October 1918. He was discharged from the AIF on 31 January 1919.
