'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He located an enemy post of eight men which had been harassing out line for some days. He led a party and surrounded the post, killing two and capturing three, including the N.C.O. in charge. He then withdrew without any casualties.'

The details provided are taken from the book "Stealth Raiders - a few daring men in 1918" written by Lucas Jordan, published in 2017 - refer to pages 30, 35, 181 and 263. Prior to the war he was a farmer of Brisbane Qld. He enlisted 15 Nov 1915 aged 23 years. He served with the 41st Infantry Battalion, and was awarded the Military Cross during his service. He had been promoted from the ranks and was a Lieutenant at the time of the action to acquire the MC, but unfortunately he was Killed In Action 15 May 1918. Lest We Forget

The Mayor (Ald. W. Dunn) yesterday received a telegram from the Base Records advising of the death of Lieutenant Francis Joseph Burtenshaw, killed in action on 15th, May inst. The gallant young officer, who was 25 years of age, is a son of our respected postmaster, Mr W A. Burtenshaw, to whom the sad news was conveyed by Canon Beasley. He enlisted in Brisbane over two years ago, prior to which he was on the land, and formerly in the employ of Dalgety, Brisbane. To Mr. and Mrs. Burtenshaw and family, the sympathy of the community will be extended in their hour of sorrow for the loss of a gallant son and brother.
