Son of Patrick Coffey and Bridget Coffey nee Fitzpatrick of Mead Street, Semaphore, SA. Brother of John Joseph Coffey, Dennis Coffey, Catherine Coffey, Mary Catherine Coffey and Patrick Francis, Coffey
At the time of enlistment he was employed with the South Australian Railway as a Clerk
Between 26 June 1919 and 31 October 1919 he studied at Clark's Business College, Chancery Lane, London, England for Indian Civil Service exams. Subjects included Georgraphy, Mathmatics, Trigonometry and Languages
Commenced return to Australia on 18 December 1919 aboard SS Konigon Luise disembarking on the 2 February 1920

On 10 November 1926 Gerald married Rene Holmstead in the Semaphore Sacred Heart Church, SA
