Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the 16th July 1916, Private George Martin, 54th Battalion (Reg No-4830), wheeler from 22 Collaroy Road, New Lambton, New South Wales, was Killed in Action 3 days before the Battle of Fromelles (19-20th July 1916), age 18 years 11 months. Cause of death unknown.

No Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing File.

Born at 22 Collaroy Road, New Lambton, New South Wales ? August? 1897 to Samuel (died 28.8.1900, New Lambton, N.S.W., age 40) and Mary Martin (remarried to Samuel Sanderson 1904, New Lambton, N.S.W., died 26.5.1934, Wallsend, N.S.W., age 71, of 22 Collaroy Road, New Lambton, New South Wales, buried at METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) B SE. 24, Mary Sanderson died 14.12.1942, New Lambton, N.S.W., age 78, sleeping here, METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 17 SE. 36) of 22 Collaroy Road, New Lambton, New South Wales, George enlisted on the 24th August 1915 with the 2nd Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A15 Star of England on the 8th March 1916.

Disembarked Marseilles, France 29.6.1916.

17 days in the field.

George is resting at Laventie Military Cemetery, La Gorgue, France. Plot II Row A Grave 20.

Mr. Martin’s name has been inscribed on the Lambton and New Lambton Roll of Honor, New Lambton Public School Roll of Honour, New Lambton War Memorial Gates, Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

Younger brother Samuel Stanley (born 8.5.1892, 22 Collaroy Road, New Lambton, New South Wales, railway loco fireman from Imperial Hotel, Erskineville, New South Wales, enlisted 12.8.1914, an Original Anzac, Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (Tropical Unit), A Company, Reg No-152, RTA 4.3.1915, reenlisted 22.7.1915, 3rd Battalion, Reg No-3376, wounded in action - 18.8.1916 (GSW clavicle, mild, fractured elbow), RTA 10.2.1920, Australian Army Pay Corps, with wife and 2 children, died 24.1.1957, Ryde, N.S.W., not officially commemorated) also served 1st A.I.F.

Younger brother Albert (born 2.5.1900, 22 Collaroy Road, New Lambton, New South Wales, moulders apprentice from 22 Collaroy Road, New Lambton, New South Wales, enlisted 17.5.1918, unfit for active service (deformity in lower jaw, weak abdominal wall), died 1968, Sydney, N.S.W.).

Unfortunately, the large headstone at the Martin gravesite has now toppled foreward from the base and has cracked, so I will now place a Memorial cross adorned with poppies in remembrance of the service and supreme sacrifice of their son George for God, King & Country. METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 17 SE. 36.

I am hoping that descendants will be aware and maybe restoration work can take place.
