88 years ago today, on the 11th November 1935, Fitter Henry Watson Hendry, referred to as Harry, 4th Australian Broad Gauge Railway Operating Company (Reg No-2988), railway fitter (N.S.W. Government Railways & Tramways), from 37 Wilton Street, Merewether, New South Wales, father of two (Evie and Allie), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 65. PRESBYTERIAN-13SW. 85.

Born at Durham, England about 1870 to James and Annie Hendry; husband of Georgina Scott Hendry nee? (married?, died 22.8.1938, Merewether, N.S.W., age 64, sleeping here) of 37 or 45 Wilton Street, Merewether, New South Wales, Harry enlisted on the 4th December 1917 with the April 1918 Reinforcements at Victoria Barracks, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A30 Borda on the 17th July 1918.
Commenced return to Australia 1.7.1919.

Never served in a theatre of war, but was granted Victory Medal.

Harry returned home on the 17th August 1919, being discharged on the 2nd September 1919.

Mr. Hendry’s name has not been inscribed on the Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates or the NSW Govt Railways and Tramways Roll of Honour, 1914-1919 or any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at Harry’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Not officially commemorated.
