Biography contributed by Glenunga International High School

Before enlisting into the army, Arthur Harold Robinson had an occupation of a fitter and turner, with no previous military service. Although the time when he was born is unknown, it’s most likely that he’s born in 1895, as he enlisted in the army at the age of 19 in 1914. There’s also no address of where he’s born, but he should be born at Gawler Railway, Gawler, South Australia, as he had a close family member, which was his father, living there before him. His father’s name is James Robinson, and it’s most likely that he and his unknown wife gave birth to Arthur at Gawler. This also presented that Arthur’s not a migrant either.

Arthur Harold Robinson enlisted into the army on 24 August 1914, and his service number was 276, which means that he’s one of the people who enlisted earlier on into the army. After training for about 2 months, he embarked as a Lance Corporal - a non-commissioned officer -  in the 10th Infantry Battalion in Adelaide on 24 October 1914, being in that unit from the start to the end of the war. The ship that he was on is named HMAT Ascanius and they arrived at Egypt - where his unit’s embarking to by early December. Not much was known about what happened to him during the war, such as the information that if he got sick or wounded and got into a hospital. However, he did return to Australia on 12 March 1918 with the final rank of Lieutenant - a commissioned officer - being in the 10th Battalion, indicating he survived the whole war.

It’s most likely that he went back to his daily life after the war, being a fitter and turner and living with his father at Gawler, while he seems to have never married to someone. He was buried in AIF Cemetery in the Western Terrace in Adelaide as a remembrance of his hard work and achievement in World War 1 after his death when he got older over time.
