John Ross was born in January 1896 at Golden Grove, South Australia. He enlisted 1st February 1916 at the age of 20. His mother Eliza Ross was his nominated next of kin. Prior to the war he worked as a farmer.
Ross was single at the time of enlistment and his religion Presbyterian. He was described as 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighed 120 lbs, with blue eyes and brown hair. He had already served 2 months with the Senior Cadets (99th) and was still serving at the time of enlistment.
He served as a Trooper with the 9th Light Horse in the Middle East and was later attached to various administrative and headquarters roles within the Egyptian Expeditionary Force.
Ross was hospitalised twice, firstly in November 1917 admitted with synovitis (joint inflammation) and again in May 1919, treated for malaria at 14th Australian General Hospital, Abbasia.
Returned to Australia Aboard Dunluce Castle, disembarked 23 August 1919 and was discharged 7 October 1919.
He lived until 3rd November 1995 dying at the age of 99 and is buried at Centennial Park Cemetery and is also commemorated in the Memorial Garden at the Cemetery. He is remembered on the Cleve WW1 Honour Roll.
