Brother of Walter Edgar Hesse who was killed in action on 25 July 1917 while serving with the 33rd Battalion and is buried in the Bethleen Farm Cemetery, Row C, Grave 19

Commenced return to Australia on 19 June 1919 aboard HT Windhuk disembarking on 21 August 1919
