William James Tiller was born in 1894 in Balaklava with brown hair and brown eyes. He was the son of George Thomas and Caroline Tiller.  When he was of age he worked as a labourer.

On the 16th of September 1915 William enlisted as a private in the 48th battalion, 4th reinforcement with the regimental number of 2426. On this day he was a single man who was the age of 21. He was 5’ 10.25” and weighed 140lbs. After enlisting his unit was embarked from Adelaide on board the RMS Mongolia on the 9th of March 1916.

William’s battalion served in Egypt and the Western front. On June the 2nd 1916 the 48th battalion embarked the Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force 2. He disembarked this recruitment in Marseilles, France, 8 June 1916.

He was admitted to the 12th Australian Field Ambulance, on the 13 of July 1916 for otitis media (ear infection) and was transferred to the 2nd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station. On the 26th of July 1916 he was discharged to base details, where then he re-joined to 48th battalion in the field on the 25th August 1916.

Tiller was admitted to the 4th Casualty Clearing Station, September 7 1916 with bronchitis, he was then transferred to the general hospital with chronic bronchitis on the 9th of September. After multiple transfers he was then diagnosed with tuberculosis on the 29th of September in the Australian Auxiliary hospital, Harefield.

He started his journey to Australia from Portland on the HT’ Wiltshire’ 12 November 1916. He disembarked Melbourne on the 31 December 1916 where he travelled to Adelaide being discharged for being medically unfit on the 15th of August 1917. After his endeavour William struggled with not being healthy and the things he saw over in the fronts but he did have something special in this time, a daughter.

On the 16th of January 1921 at the mere age of 26, a veteran died from unknown reasons with 1 year and 334 days serving our country, who also received a British war medal and a Victory medal. His panel number for the Australian War Memorial, roll of honour is 147. William James Tiller now rests in Sherlock Cemetery (Plot 26 B, Row 15), Sherlock, South Australia.
