Son of August Ernest Gottlieb Theodor Oehlmann and Hannah Orhlman nee Cameron of 'Burwood', Curzon Street, Range, Toowoomba, QLD.

Brother of William Cameron Oehlman who returned to Australia on 1 January 1920 having served with the 52nd and 41st Battalions; Cyril Francis Leigh Oehlman who returned to Australia on 2 March 1919 having served with the 15th Battalion; Arnold Bert Theodore Oehlman who returned to Australia on 25 April 1919 having served with the 4th Light Horse Field Ambulance

Commenced return to Australia on 9 August 1919 aboard HT Ceramic disembarking on 3 October 1919 at Sydney for onward travel to Brisbane

On 23 January 1919 John married Elizabeth Jardine in the Parish Church Sootby, Wetheral, Carlilsle, Cumberland, England. Vicar E. Saunders Greene officiated.
