Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

James Henry Laughton was the son of John and Alice Maud Laughton of Glenorchy, Victoria. He enlisted in 1914 with the 5th Battalion AIF and took part in the Anzac Day landing on Gallipoli 25 April 1915. He was severely wounded only a week later, being hit the thigh by shrapnel which caused several fractures to his left femur.

James was evacuated to Alexandria in Egypt and three months later was taken to England on a hospital ship. He was admitted to the 4th London General Hospital during August 1915. Nine months later he was returned to Australia, due to his compound fracture, during May 1916. He was discharged from the AIF with a pension a few months later.

His younger brother, 2749 Corporal Griffin Inglis Laughton M.I.D. 46th Battalion AIF, was later killed in action near Dernancourt, France, on 5 April 1918, aged 29.
