Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board

Herbert George GRIEVES was born on 10 November 1894 at Yass, NSW. He joined the NSWGR&T as a probationer in the Goulburn District of the Railways Traffic Branch on 3 October 1910. On 1 January 1911 he was elevated to the grade of junior porter in the same District. On 3 August 1914 he was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces.

On 19 May 1915 Herbert was killed in action at Gallipoli.

Herbert George GRIEVES was born on 10th November 1894 at Yass, NSW. He joined the NSW Government Railways and Tramways as a probationer in the Goulburn District of the Railways Traffic Branch on 3rd October 1910. On 1st January 1911 he was elevated to the grade of junior porter in the same District. On 3rd August 1914 he was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces.

He joined the AIF on 26th August 1914. He was assigned to the 1st Infantry Battalion with the rank of Private (Service Number 376). He nominated his father, Matthew James Grieves of Coolallie, NSW, as his next of kin.

The 1st Infantry Battalion was raised within a fortnight of the declaration of war in August 1914. It embarked for Egypt two months later. It arrived in Egypt on 2nd December 1914 before embarking in April 1915 for the Gallipoli Campaign. The battalion took part in the landings at Anzac Cove on 25th April 1915, as part of the second and third waves. It continued to serve there until the evacuation in December 1915.

On 19th May 1915 Herbert was killed in action.

His grave is in Shrapnel Valley Cemetery, Gallipoli Peninsula, Canakkale Province, Turkey. The Australian War memorial gives his place of association as Yass, NSW.
