Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

103 years ago today, on the 1st September 1918, the battles of Mont St Quentin and Peronne took place during The Great War, regarded as among the finest Australian feats on the Western Front and the intensity of the action is evident from the fact that eight Victoria Crosses were awarded to Australians between 31 August and 2 September 1918.

I have located 7 soldiers of the 1st A.I.F. who fell on this day who are memorialised, or awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.

Lance Corporal Frederick Charles Harris, 53rd Battalion, dispatch clerk & packer, from William Street, Hamilton, New South Wales. Memorialised at his parent’s gravesite. ANGLICAN 1-05. 117.

Also memorialised at the same grave site, Frederick's brother, Private William George Harris 90817, 17th Coy. Machine Gun Corps (B.E.F.) KIA July 1917.  The Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial (Panel 56), Belgium.
