Private James Allen Dean, second son of the late Mr. John W. and Mrs. Emily Dean (now Mrs. James Bird, of Miles, Queensland), was killed in action somewhere in France, on July 9 last, having sustained gun-shot wounds in the head, arm, leg, and thigh." - from the Maitland Daily Mercury 24 Aug 1917 (nla.gov.au)
