Frank left Adelaide on HMAT A 68 Anchises on 2 September 1915 and proceeded to Gallipoli where his unit reinforced the 10th Battalion when they left. He was admitted to hospital at Mudros with mumps on 11 December. Frank then was stationed at a training depot in England prior to going to France from Folkestone with his unit on 15 March 1917 where he served out the duration of the war. He returned to Australia on the Sardinia, disembarked on 3 June 1919 and was discharged on 27 July.
