Albert Lingwood-Smith was a driver in World War 1, he served from 1914-1919. Albert was born on 9th of September 1890, in Grote Street Gawler Ward, South Australia. He grew up with his three brothers; Hector William Powell, Ernest, Herbert, and his parents; Lily H. J. Lingwood-Smith, and William Thomas Lingwood-Smith. His father was a former Detective photographer and was a well-known expert in Criminal Investigation. However, he died, on the 1 October 1933, from hypostatic pneumonia following injuries from a collision between a tram and a car. Albert also had a younger sister, Thelma, who sadly passed away when he was only seven years old.
Albert worked as a plumber before joining the Royal navy. In 1910, he signed a five-year engagement with the Royal Navy and served as a Steward on the ship, Psyche.
On the 19th of August 1914, Albert enlisted in the army as a driver. At the time, he was only 24-years and 11-months old. Albert was assigned to the 10th Battalion, which was part of the 3rd brigade. He embarked on the Transport A11 Ascanius on the 20 of October 1914 along with other Australian Soldiers.
As a driver, Albert had a similar rank to privates. There were a variety of jobs drivers were responsible for. Most drivers rode horses, who carried wooden trailers with artillery and guns in them; other drivers would transport soldiers of higher ranks, such as chief and sergeants.
On the 3 December 1914, Albert disembarked at Egypt. They then proceeded toward Mena camp, where they would train for the next few weeks.
On the 2nd of April 1916 Albert was transferred to the 50th battalion. During this time, veterans, such as Albert, were transferred to other battalions to assist in training new recruits. This was called the Doubling of the AIF.
On the 11th of June 1916 the 50th battalion arrived at France. The Australian soldiers prepared for battle at Mouquet farm, the higher ground of Pozieres. Nine attacks against the Germans, were sent out by three different divisions. While other soldiers were fighting, Albert could have had a vital job behind the scenes; he could have assisted in communication between the front line and other soldiers, or he could have been responsible for providing weapons.
Unfortunately, because of the unhygienic environment, Albert did get sick a few times. On the 23rd of September 1915, he was admitted to hospital in Alexandria, and then moved to a hospital in Cairo Zeitoun, for 36 days. In 1916, Albert was admitted as sick to the hospital on the 11th of January, in Tel-el-K a hospital not far off from Cairo. After this he wasn’t admitted for a year. In 1917, Albert was admitted with laryngitis on the 13 of January, in Harve. Only seven months later, He was admitted to hospital with an injury to the right shoulder on the 12th of August.
Albert was punished for poor behaviour with fines in the late years of the war. His first fine was given to him on the 6th of July 1918. He was absent for around 3 hours and was apprehended by the M.P, consequently forfeiting 3day pay by CO. 50th battalion. His next two fines were given to him because of bad behavior and only occurred a few months after his previous one. Albert most likely swore at a superior officer.
On the 8th of December 1919 Albert embarked on the Konigen Louise heading back home to Australia. After Albert arrived back home, there is no recording of him building a family of his own. He most likely moved to Victoria and passed away on the 12th of February 1954 at the age of 64. He was buried in Springvale Australia.
For Albert’s service in the Australian Imperial Forces, he was awarded 3 medals; the Victory Medal, British War Medal and the 1914-1915 Star. The 1914-1915 Star was awarded to all soldiers who enlisted in the Army in 1914 or 1915 and survived the war.
