Edward Alfred Dove was born at Dunton, Essex, England in 1873 to parents Ezekiel Lines Dove & Jane Dove (nee Scotchman). His birth was registered in the December quarter, 1873 in the registration district of Billericay, Essex, England. Edward Alfred Dove was baptised in St. Mary the Virgin Church, Dunton, Essex, England on 29th March, 1874.


He married Mary Strong on 5th November, 1903 in All Saints & Hatchford Church, Ockham, Surrey. Edward was a 30 year old Farmer from Childerditch & Mary was a 26 year old from Ockham.


Ezekial Lines Dove, father of Edward Alfred Dove, died on 14th February, 1903.


Edward & Mary Dove had 2 children - Gwendoline Mary Dove (born 10th March, 1905 at Childerditch) and Norman Robert Dove (born 30th November, 1908.


According to information provided by his wife for the Roll of Honour – Edward Dove came to Australia when he was 33 years of age. He embarked from London, England on 5th November, 1910 on Narrung.


Jane Dove, mother of Edward Alfred Dove, died in April, 1915 at Colchester, Essex.


On 29th September, 1916 Edward Alfred Dove enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) as a 40 year old, married, Farm Hand. His next of kin was listed as his wife – Mrs Mary Dove, Southampton Road, Southampton, England. Edward Dove stated on his Attestation Papers that he had previously served for 3 years with 1st Essex Infantry. His postal address was listed as c/o Mr Christie, Wildes Meadow, Moss Vale but this was crossed out & replaced with Southampton Road, Southampton, England.


He was posted to “C” Depot Battalion on 29th September, 1916 for recruit training. He was transferred to “A” Company, 55th Battalion on 26th October, 1916. Private Dove was admitted to Hospital while posted at Goulburn Camp on 1st November, 1916 with a Septic Arm. He was transferred on 5th November, 1916 to “E” Company & was discharged from Hospital on 9th November, 1916 & posted to 8th Reinforcements of 55th Battalion.


Private Edward Alfred Dove, Service number 3250, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on HMAT Suevic (A29) on 11th November, 1916 with the 55th Infantry Battalion, 8th Reinforcements & disembarked at Devonport, England on 30th January, 1917.


Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.


On 1st February, 1917 Private Dove was marched in to 14th Training Battalion at Hurdcott, Wiltshire from Australia. He was marched out to Windmill Hill Camp at Perham Downs, Wiltshire on 28th April, 1917 & transferred the same day to 63rd Battalion from 55th Battalion.


He proceeded overseas to France via Southampton on 23rd August, 1917 to reinforce 34th Battalion & was marched in to 3rd A.D.B.D. (Australian Divisional Base Depot) at Rouelles, France on 24th August, 1917 from England. Private Dove was marched out to the Front on 31st August, 1917 from 3rd A.D.B.D. at Rouelles & was taken on strength of 34th Battalion in the Field on 2nd September, 1917.


Private Edward Alfred Dove was wounded in action in the Field on 2nd October, 1917. He was admitted to 3rd Field Ambulance on 2nd October, 1917 with G.S.W. (Gunshot wound/s) to Left Arm then transferred the same day & admitted to 17th Casualty Clearing Station. Private Dove was transferred to Ambulance Train & was admitted to 18th General Hospital at Camiers, France on 2nd October, 1917. He was transferred & admitted to 6th Convalescent Depot at Etaples, France on 10th October, 1917. Private Dove was transferred on 12th October, 1917 & admitted to 14th Convalescent Depot at Trouville on 13th October, 1917. He was transferred to Base Details on 2nd December, 1917 & was marched in to 3rd A.D.B.D. at Rouelles on 3rd December, 1917. Private Dove was marched out to the Front from 3rd A.B.D.B. on 13th December, 1917 & rejoined 34th Battalion in the Field on 16th December, 1917.


He reported sick on 24th February, 1918 & was admitted to 11th Field Ambulance with P.U.O. (Pyrexia (fever) of Unknown Origin). He was discharged to duty on 5th March, 1918 & rejoined 34th Battalion in the Field on the same day.


Private Edward Alfred Dove was wounded in action (second occasion) on 3/5th April, 1918 (Dates as listed on Casualty Form – Active Service). He was admitted to 11th Australian Field Ambulance then transferred to 5th Casualty Clearing Station on 5th April, 1918 with G.S.W. (gunshot wound/s) to Wrist. Private Dove was transferred to Ambulance Train & admitted to 3rd Australian General Hospital at Abbeville, France on 5th April, 1918. He was transferred to Ambulance Train 26 on 8th April, 1918 & admitted to 14th General Hospital at Boulogne. Private Dove embarked for England on 10th April, 1918 on Hospital Ship Princess Elizabeth.


On 10th April, 1918 Private Dove was admitted to Military Hospital at Herne Bay, England with a shell wound to Wrist. The Hospital Admissions form recorded Shell wound to left forearm – ulnar paralysis. He was transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital at Dartford, Kent, England on 25th April, 1918 with G.S.W. to left Forearm.


Private Edward Alfred Dove died at 10.30 am on 10th May, 1918 at 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, Kent, England from G.S.W. (Gunshot wound/s) to left forearm & Heart & Respiratory failure whilst under Anaesthetic.

He was buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey, England – Australian Military Burial Ground - Plot number 180,993. This is now recorded by CWGC as Memorial reference – XI. A. 4. Private E. A. Dove now has a Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone.
