Septimus was the ninth of fourteen children of James Dyson (b1810 in Lancashire, England) and second wife Jane Devling (b1833 in London, England). James was a Labourer in Yorkshire when he was Transported to Van Diemen's Land in 1834 on board the Convict Ship 'Moffat". Granted a Ticket of Leave in 1841 he moved to the Swan River Colony (Perth) WA where he married and worked as a Pit Sawywer. Following the death of wife Hannah, James married Jane Edwards (nee Devling) in 1861 in Perth. Jane was a fifteen year old Domestic Servant in London and living at the St Pancras Workhouse when she arrived in Fremantle WA on one of the 'Bride Ships". James and Jane settled in Perth WA where James was a Timber Merchant and Dealer.
Septimus worked as a Labourer and Cab Driver in Perth, WA and was regularly before the Peth Magistrates Court for offences such as allowing his dog to fight in public, horses trespassing on public streets, fighting, drunkenness, using 'filthy' language, causing an accident whilst drunk driving his cab and over charging passengers (Trove).
In 1908 he married Dagmar Frances Alexander Towton (nee Lambley; b1868 in Sydney, NSW) - Dagmar had nine children with first husband, and she and Septimus had two sons. The couple settled in Perth, WA where Septimus worked as a Dealer and Labourer. In June 1916 he enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:3095) and served with 69 Depot, 22/16 Infantry Battalion and 5th Pioneer Battalion. He was in England in 1918 - attached to Engineers Details - when he was classified as Medically Unfit - 'Too old for winter in France' (National Archives Australia) and was Discharged in April 1918.
Septimus and Dagmar remained in Perth WA where Septimus worked as a Labourer and Cook. Dagmar died in 1933 and Septimus in 1938.
