James Bennett was the son of Edward and Mary Ann Elizabeth Bennett, of Emerald, Queensland. The father, Edward Bennett had died in 1901 when James was only 9 years of age.
James had a younger brother, 3435 Pte. Harry Bennett 47th Battalion AIF, who was killed in action defending Dernancourt in France on 27 March 1918, aged 23.
James's mother received his medals and entitlements in Emerald, Queensland.
