Samuel Angus Mackay was born on the 9.9.1895 in Fremantle. His father was Donald McDonald Mackay MLC, elected in 1896 to represent the North Province of Western Australia. Donald and his brother Roderick were involved in the development of the pearl fisheries in the north-west and Mundabullangana station near Roebourne. Roderick died when he boar went missing during a storm and his widow Emily married the Rev. Robert Hanlin of Scots Church, Fremantle. Donald died in 1904.
Samuel had previously served with the 11th AGA Citizen Forces. He enlisted at Perth on the 15.3.1915 and was initially a Private at the 13th Depot Company. He was 19 years old, a bank clerk and Presbyterian. Samuel is described as being 5 feet 11¾ inches tall, with a chest measurement of 37½-39½ inches, dark complexion, brown eyes and dark hair. Samuel was appointed to the 28th Battalion 7th Brigade with Service Number 743. He embarked on Ascanius at Fremantle in May 1915, having been promoted to Sergeant on the 25.5.1915. Samuel landed in Egypt on the 30.6.15.
Medical notes state that he had myopia in Australia, had worn glasses since the age of 6. On the voyage to Suez, he was struck on the right eye with an iron bar. On 8.12.1915 he was admitted to hospital. He was returned to Australia on the 20.1.16 per Karoola with high myopia astigmatism and was admitted to Fremantle Hospital on 14.2.16. On the 15.4.16 he was discharged as permanently unfit with defective vision. His mother Emily Charlotte MacKay was living in Stirling St, Fremantle in 1915. She died in Fremantle on the 1.6.1954 and was buried at Fremantle Presbyterian in Section E 0087. Samuel was enrolled in the University of Adelaide from 1919 to 1921 and granted a Bachelor of Science. In 1922 he married Dulcie Elizabeth Lane in 1922 in Claremont, Perth, Western Australia and died on the 25.12.1979 in New South Wales.
