In a statement dated 10 November 1917, Lieutenant F J Baxter, "B" Company, 38th Battalion, stated "Joseph....was killed on the night 26 February during a raid we made on the German trenches E of Armentieres.  His body was recovered, brought in and identified by Lt Baxter who states that after examination of the body he came to the conclusion that Nelson was killed outright by a shell."

Sgt A E Madill stated on 16 November 1917 "I was in this raid at Hoop Lines when he was killed and know he was buried at Armentieres Cemetery which the Registrar of Cemetery will confirm.   We were both "B" Company.  We enlisted together in Melbourne on the same day.  He was a very fine fellow."
