Son of William Tilly Vagg and Sarah Vagg nee McKinnon of 'Goodrest', Carrum, Victoria. Brother of Ewen John Vagg who returned to Australia on 7 March 1919 having served with the 29th Battalion.

Commenced return to Australia on 12 April 1916 aboard HS Karoola disembarking on 12 May 1916
