Died on this date –  25th March …… Charles James Evans was born on 17th July, 1898 at Cooma, New South Wales to parents Charles William & Isandra Evans (nee Mackey).  

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 15th November, 1917 as a 19 year old, single, Farmer (Orchard Labourer) from Central Colo, via Windsor, NSW.

Private Charles James Evans, Service number 7840, embarked from Sydney, NSW on HMAT Ulysses (A38) on 19th December, 1917 with the 2nd Infantry Battalion, 26th Reinforcements & disembarked at Suez on 16th January, 1918.

On 24th January, 1918 Private Evans re-embarked at Port Said & disembarked at Taranto (Italy) on 2nd February, 1918. He entrained from Taranto on 5th February, 1918 & detrained at “Cherberg” (France) on 12th February, 1918. Private Evans embarked from “Cherberg” on 12th February, 1918 & disembarked at Southampton, England on 13th February, 1918.

Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.

He was marched in to 1st Training Battalion at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire on 13th February, 1918.

On 21st February, 1918 Private Evans was sent sick to Group Clearing Hospital & was admitted to the Military Hospital at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire on 22nd February, 1918.

 

Private Charles James Evans died on 25th March, 1918 at the Military Hospital, Sutton Veny of Influenza, Measles, Bronchitis & Pleurisy.

He was buried in St. John the Evangelist Churchyard at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire, England where 140 other WW1 Australian Soldiers & 2 Australian WW1 Nurses are laid to rest.
