A 24 year old motor mechanic prior to enlisting in the AIF on 20 August 1914, Gnr 978 Harry Wilson embarked for overseas from Melbourne on 20 October 1914 aboard HMAT Shropshire.

While serving at Gallipoli he was Mentioned in Despatches for conspicuous services and awarded a Military Medal for bravery in the field.

After being wounded in action on 11 June 1915 he was evacuated to England for medical treatment which included having his injured leg amputated.

He left England to return to Australia on 24 June 1916.
