Son of Alfred and Rachel CARLTON, 42 Andreas Street, Petersham, NSW
William served in France and contracted illness after the Battle of the Somme and was invalided to Fairfield Hospital England. He rejoined his unit as officer's orderly.
LABOR M.P. FOR CONCORD DEAD
MR. WILLIAM JOSEPH CARLTON, Labor M.L.A. for Concord, died at his home last night. Mr. Carlton, who had been ill for some time, was a member of the Legislative Assembly for 13 years. The late Mr. Carlton is survived by his widow, two daughters — Mrs. Kathleen Haslett. Miss Marleen Carlton — and a son, Walter.
The sudden death of Mr. William Joseph Carlton, M.L.A. for Concord last night shocked his Parliamentary colleagues. . Mr. Carlton had not been ill. Yesterday he had been out
motoring and was gardening at his home. He had a stroke later.
Mr. Carlton was one of the personalities among private members of the Legislative Assembly. A sincere, blunt man he is best remembered for his forceful and efficient reign as Government Whip from 1941 to 1947 when he was defeated for this position by Mr. McGrath. Mr. Carlton was 63. He was a boilermaker's assistant at Eveleigh workshops before he entered Parliament as M.L.A. for Glebe in May, 1935.
