Lance Corporal Arthur James Shout (Service No:2919) enlisted in the AIF as a Private attached to 22 Depot Battalion. He embarked from Melbourne for the Middle East with 38th Infantry Battalion on board HMAT Medic A7 and was later deployed to France. In October 1917 he was WiA in France - GSW to his right thigh - and evacuated to England Lance Corporal Shout embarked from England on board A29 HT Suevic for Australia on 21 April 1918 and was Discharged on 15 August 1918. Older brother Captain Alfred John Shout VC served in WWI and family anecdotes have Alfred and half brother William John McGovern/Shout making their way to South Africa in 1900 and serving with Bethune's Mounted infantry.

Born in 1889 in Wellington New Zealand, Arthur was the fifth of eleven children of John (Jack) Richard Shout (b1858 in Stepney, London) and Agnes (Alice) Mary McGovern (nee Kelly; b1857 in Dublin, Ireland). Jack (a Cook) and Alice (a Widow) married in 1887 in Wellington, New Zealand. Following Alice's death in 1927, Jack remarried. He worked as a Cook and Caterer.

Arthur was worked as a Labourer and Farmer and in 1914 in Melbourne, Victoria married Margaret Eva Crook (b1896 in Dandenong, Victoria). Following his Discharge, in December 1918 Arthur applied for land under the Discharged Soldiers' Settlement Act 1917 for market gardening and poultry raising. Arthur and Margaret settled at Somerville in Frankston, Victoria where they raised their family and Arthur worked as a Labourer and later a Manager. Arthur died in 1964 and Margaret in 1970.
