Biography contributed by Adelaide Botanic High School

Charles Bertram was born in 1893 in Warracknabeal Victoria but at some stage his family moved to South Australia. Before enlisting Charles worked as a butcher and likely lived at Aveland Avenue North Norwood, South Australia with his parents. His next of kin was his father Charles Bertram who lived in South Australia. Charles Bertram wasn’t married and his listed religion was listed as Church of England.

On 18th August 1914, at the age of twenty-one, Charles enlisted into the Australian Imperial Forces signing the oath. He was assigned to the 10th Infantry Battalion as a Private and his service number B2455.

His medical examination certificate, recorded his height at 5 feet and six inches and weighing 137 lbs. He had brown eyes and hair with a dark complexion. The age recorded on this document indicated his age was 22 and 6 months, however the enlistment papers indicated 21 7/12 months with both documents signed 19th Aug 1914.

He embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board Transport 11 Ascanius on 20 October 1914 for Cairo.

He returned to Australia on 25/12/18 on the ship Port Darwin. He was discharged from the Australian Imperial Forces on 23/2/19 due to ‘cessation of hostilities.’

Charles Bertram died 19-2-41 at Keswick South Australia
