Son of William BIGMORE and Eliza Frances nee BUREELL, 1 French Street, Geelong West, Victoria

Alfred enlisted on 26 July 1916, aged 36, single and stated his occupation as a carpenter. He was appointed to the 3rd Pioneer Battalion due to holding a trade suitable for this Battalion and to the 3rd Reinforcements.

Alfred embarked from Melbourne on the ship Karoo on 18 June 1916, arriving in Plymouth England on 15 November.  On 28 February 1917 Alfred proceeded to France to finally join with the 3rd Pioneer Battalion on 16 March 1917.

Whilst serving in France, his records show that Alfred was Wounded in Action - gassed on 25 May 1918.  Remaining in France Alfred was treated in various hospitals including in Le Havre.  Alfred rejoined his unit in August 1918 for a few days, prior to returning to England for Leave and again later rejoined his unit in France once again.

In April 1919, Alfred once more returned to England prior to embarking for Australia on the ship Themistocles on 16 June 1919 disembarking in Melbourne on 8 August 1919 prior to his discharge on 3 October 1919.
