Died on this date - 30th March........Private Thomas William Chilton was born in England around 1888. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) in Sydney, NSW on 9th October, 1916 as a 28 year old Farm Labourer from Coolamon, NSW.

Private Chilton had previously served with the 1st Battalion, A.I.F for 1 year & 317 days but had been discharged on account of his wounds which he had received at Gallipoli. He had been discharged from the A.I.F. on 30th July, 1916 due to medical unfitness.

Private Chilton arrived in England on 9th January, 1917 & was posted to 14th Training Battalion at Hurdcott, Wiltshire. He arrived in France on 30th April, 1917.

Private Chilton was wounded in action on 12th May, 1917 & invalided to England. He recovered & was sent on furlough from 10 - 24th August, 1917. He was admitted to Hospital in mid November,1917 with Gastritis & then posted to Overseas Training Brigade at Longbridge Deverill, Wiltshire ready to be sent back to France.

Private Chilton was transferred to 14th Training Battalion at Codford, Wiltshire for a course of Instruction in Signalling on 23rd January, 1918. He was admitted to Group Clearing Hospital at Codford, Wiltshire on 19th March, 1918 then transferred to 3rd New Zealand General Hospital at Codford on 22nd March, 1918.

Private Thomas William Chilton died at 8.20 p.m. on 30th March, 1918 at the 3rd New Zealand Hospital, Codford, Wiltshire. Hospital records state he died from Lobar Pneumonia. A post mortem determined the cause of death as Purulent bronchitis, with septicaemia and pleurisy.

Private Chilton was buried in Codford St. Mary's New Cemetery where 30 other WW1 Australian Soldiers & 66 New Zealand Soldiers are buried.
