Edith was nursing at the Children’s Hospital in Melbourne when she enlisted for the Australian Army Nursing Service on 17 July 1917, aged 32 years, single and named her next of kin as her Aunt, Mrs Alice M Small of 93 Prospect Road Newtown Geelong. Mrs Small was also named in Edith’s Will.

Edith embarked on the ship HMAT Wiltshire from Sydney on 31 August 1917, arriving in Alexandria Egypt on 5 October and on 17 October was appointed to 17th Australia General Hospital.  Edith remained there till 3 April 1918 when she transferred to Salonika Greece to join the 52nd AGH. 

Next was an appointment to the 42nd AGH on 1 June 1918, followed by a transfer to 43rd AGH in July and in August to the Red Cross Committee, still in Salonika.

After the Armistice, Edith embarked for England and arrived in Southampton on 25 February 1919 and was deployed to AIF Headquarters in London.  In March 1919, Edith was granted leave with pay to July 1919 to enable her attendance at South West Polytechnic and Nursing College located in Chelsea.

Upon expiration of her Leave / Training in July, Edith was reappointed to 3rd Australian Army Hospital prior to finally embarking for Australia in August 1919, arriving on 27 September 1919.

Edith was discharged on 14 January 1920.  Edith later resided in Hepburn Springs Victoria, never married and passed away in July 1967 aged 82.  Her remains were cremated and later scattered at Springvale Botanical Gardens, Victoria.
