Clarance Cyril Bell was born in Mount Bryan, South Australia. His next of kin was his father Robert Bell. His occupation before enlisting was a farmer. 

He decided to enlist in the AIF (Australian Imperial Force) on the 15th of February 1916, he was 24 years and 6 months old at the time. He was appointed to the 2nd Battalion of the AIF on the 20th of March 1916, his service number assigned to him was 2373.

He embarked  on the 19th of September 1916 and disembarked on the 14th of November on the same year at Plymouth. He was transferred to the 27th Battalion 17th December 1916.

He received a severe gunshot wound in his right thigh at Amiens and was sent to King Heath’s hospital admitted 18th August 1918 for treatment.

Bell returned to Australia and disembarked 15th August 1918, he was discharged on the 29th of September 1919.
