Wounded in action Pozieres 26 July 1916, died the next day in the No.4 Casualty Clearing Station of gunshot wounds to the head.
Riverine Grazier (Hay, NSW) 11 August 1916.
‘His parents received a message from the military authorities on Wednesday that Private Charles William Riley, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Riley, of Lachlan Gate, had been killed in action in France. The deceased soldier, who was about thirty years of age, was a native of Hay, but we understand that he enlisted in Bendigo. He had seen about sixteen months of active service, having been at the Dardanelles prior to the Australians being transferred to France. About six months ago he was temporarily incapacitated by a mild attack of meningitis. A brother, Mr. Hugh Riley, is at present in the training camp.’
