Biography contributed by Sharyn Roberts

Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as stretcher bearer during five days operations. On several occasions he worked throughout the day and night without resting. He carried wounded men long distances on his back under heavy fire. On one occasion, when a shell wounded the three other bearers, he, single handed, carried the wounded men to the aid post.'
