The fourth of eight children, John was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1891 to Robert Swan McCubbing (b1852 in Kircudbrightshire, Scotland) and Charlotte (Lottie) Annie Elfrida Gover (b1864 in Madras, India). Robert (a Procurator) and Lottie married in 1883 in Crookes, Yorkshire - Lottie's mother was Matron at the Blind School in Ecclesall Bierlow in Yorkshire. Robert and Lottie settled in Glasgow, Scotland where Robert was a Solicitor, Writer and Bank Agent. Eldest sons Bob and Charles were in Canada when Robert died in 1911, and in 1912 John escorted his mother and three sisters (Freda, Mary and Jean) to Australia, arriving in Albany WA in June 1912 on board the Persic. Jim joined them and the family settled in Claremont, Fremantle WA.
John was working as a Clerk in Fremantle WA in 1916 when he enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:737) and served with 44th Infantry Battalion in France. John was WiA on two occasions - in 1917 with a GSW to the left hand, and severely in 1918 with GSW to face and left shoulder. John was Discharged in March 1919.
John and brother Jim were keen bowlers, and John worked as a Plumber and Salesman in Fremantle when he returned from the War. In 1927 John married Pauline Grant Carter (b1899 in Lancashire, England) - Pauline was working in Geraldton WA as a Ledger-Keeper. The couple settled in Cottesloe, Fremantle WA and by 1931 John was a Manufacturer (Travel Goods). John died in 1974 and Pauline in 1978.
