95 years ago today, on the Thursday afternoon of the 18th June 1925, Private James Hassett, 53rd Battalion, carter from Park Street, Singleton, New South Wales and 8 Park Street, Hamilton, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 48. CATHOLIC 1-28. 7.

Born at Reedy Creek, New South Wales 1876 to John and Catherine Hassett; husband of Lucy Agnes Hassett nee Hamilton (married 1919, Murrurundi, N.S.W., died 1974, location unknown, 49 years a widow), James enlisted November 1915 with the 35th Battalion at West Maitland, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 29.4.1917 with pleurisy, James returned home November 1917 being medically unfit with chronic rheumatism, discharged December 1917. (Service record gives no evidence that James suffered from gas poisoning).

Mr Hassett’s name has been inscribed on the Singleton War Memorial.

The inscription on James’s headstone gives no indication that he served with the 1st A.I.F., so I have placed poppies in remembrance of his service for God, King and Country.
