Vaughan Gilbert Trease was born in Fremantle in 1894. He was a blacksmith striker of 15 Sydney St, South Fremantle and Presbyterian. In 1907, he had acute rheumatic fever which affected his heart and in 1911 an episode of oedema of the feet. Vaughan was described as being 5’8 ¼” with dark complexion, a chest measurement of 34 - 36½ inches, grey eyes and brown hair. His mother, Blanche Trease née Mews, was the widow of John Gilbert Trease and she later remarried, to become Mrs SH Sackett of San Francisco. He had a sister, Blanche.
There were two enlistments. The first time, he enlisted on the 11.6.15 at Fremantle and served 101 days with the AIF as Private, service number 4881. He embarked at Fremantle on HMAT Wandilla A62. Vaughan was assigned to Unit Hospital & Convalescent home on the 23.6.1915, attached to C Depot, London 1st Australian General Hospital. On the 13.9.15 he transferred to Driver, 16th AS Corps, 6th Infantry. On 1.11.1915, he took ill with dyspnoea in the cardiac region and giddiness. On the 21.11.15 he was admitted to the 1st AGH Heliopolis and discharged on the 19.1.16. The same day, he embarked at Suez to continue his journey home on the hospital ship Karoola. He disembarked in Fremantle on the 15.2.16. and was admitted as a patient in Number 8 AGH Fremantle. On the 21.2.16 he was diagnosed with Mitral Endocarditis (valvular heart disease) and on the 19.9.16 discharged from the Army.
Enlistment 2: on the 26.6.17, he enlisted aged 22 with Service number 6406 and was appointed to Home Service 22 Depot (Pioneers), 1st Australian General Hospital. On the 24.8.17 he was discharged at his own request.
Vaughan died on the 16.9.1918 at Number 8 General Hospital, Fremantle of heart disease and dropsy. He was buried in Fremantle Cemetery, Presbyterian EE portion grave 170 (GRM/6)
