Biography contributed by Karan CAMPBELL-DAVIS

Heydon Leslie PIPER was born in 1885 in Newcastle, New South Wales, the youngest of four children to parents Edward and Eliza (née WOODS) PIPER.  (* His birth registration is in the name of Leslie PIPER)

After serving 12 months of Home Service with the Australian Army Medical Corps at the Liverpool Garrison Hospital, Heydon was accepted into the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) in Sydney, on 16th April 1917.   Following his recruit training at Liverpool, he was assigned as a Private in the Australian Army Medical Corps, embarking for England on 3rd August 1917.

Although Heydon spent a large part of his service in England as a hospital patient himself, due to recurrent bouts of nephritis and epilepsy, he was transferred for duty to the 1st Australian General Hospital in Sutton Veny, England, on 9th January 1919, where he spent the majority of that year.  He was returned to Australia for discharge in Sydney on 23rd November 1919.  Heydon died in Coogee NSW on 3rd February 1959, aged 73.  He's buried in the Woronora Memorial Park.
