Served as Fredrick Oates. He was underage when he enlisted.

Son of John Thomas Oates and Hettie Austin Oates of William Street, Orange, NSW.

On 21 July 1917 he disembarked HT Beltana at Cape Town, South Africa where he re-embarked HT Ceramic for return voyage Australia. Disembarked on 15 September 1917 at Melbourne for onward travel to Sydney.
