Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Corporal Thomas Norman Johnson (Service No:991) enlisted in the AIF on 29 March 1915, and was a Private (mustered as Gunner) attached to 11th Light Horse Regiment 4th Reinforcement on 17 September 1915 when he embarked with his Unit from Brisbane for Egypt on board HMAT A1 Hymettus. Promoted to Corporal, he embarked from Alexandria for Marseilles on 1 June 1916 on board HMTS Haverford for service on the Western Front with 11th Field Artillery Brigade. Corporal Johnson 'Died of Wounds' at Fleurbaix, France on 20 July 1916, and was initially buried in a small cemetery at Eaton Hill near Laventie and Armentieres before reburial at Ration Farm Military Cemetery. Corporal Johnson's effects, returned to his father, comprised a belt and revolver in case, a dismantled shotgun, an air pillow, leather haversack and powder horn. His father, writing to the Army in 1917, expressed shock and concern that he had heard 'my son's watch and other effects were auctioned by the battalion' (NAA 1917).

Thomas was born in Warwick QLD in 1894, eldest of eight children of William Guard Johnson (b1868 in Warwick, QLD) and Edith Emmeline Merry (b1872 in Warwick, QLD). William and Edith married in 1894 and settled in Warwick where they raised their family and William was a Draper/Merchant. William was involved in the Warwick community, serveing as a member of the Warwick Town Council (and as Mayor in 1912), as a Justice of the Peace, a Cemetery Trustee, President of the Traders' Association and - a keen horseman - was a founding member of the Warwick Coursing Club.

Thomas worked as a Salesman, and in 1915 was a Draper working with his father in Warwick when he enlisted in the AIF.
