Private Henry O'Donnell was born in Brisbane in 1877. Prior to joining the AIF he made a living as a general labourer.

He served under two different names. He used his legal name first and after returning to Australia and being discharged he reenlisted under the alias of "Henry "Harry" Thompson".

Private O'Donnell experiences during the war physically was difficult. While serving he suffered a gun shot wound to his right arm. He later developed tuberculosis, pleurisy, shell shock, influenza and pneumonia. He passed away on the 24th of March 1918 at the age of 48 from cardiac failure as a result of tuberculosis.
