Hedley John Goodall was born in April 1896 in Salisbury Australia. Goodall was the son of Thomas Goodall and Maud Goodall. Goodall enlisted to fight in the First World War on 14th February 1916 in Saulsbury South Australia. According to his attestation paper, Hedley John Goodall had auburn hair, brown eyes, a fresh complexion and was 172 cm tall. He described himself as Congregational. Goodall worked as a Farmer prior to his enlistment.

Hedley John Goodall enlisted at the age of 19 in Adelaide. On the 27th of July 1916 Goodall and his unit embarked the RMS Malwa to the Middle East. Goodall joined the 9th Light Horse Regiment as a private.

Soon after his arrival he was hospitalised in Moascar with mumps. He was taken on strenght with 9th Light Horse 10 October 1916 after he recovered.  In August 1917 he spent time in Rest Camp and returned to duty at the end of the month. Goodall was appointed to the role of Lance Corporal 17 October 1917.

In September  1918 he was treated for P.U.O, (Pyrexia of unknown origin) which is a form of pneumonia and is common to get during the war and is now known as trench fever. He recovered and returned to his unit mid-November. 

Hedley John Goodall married Elsie Irene (1897 - 1957). Goodall died at the age of 57 on the fourth of October 1953. Elsie and Goodall are buried in Salsbury Australia together.
